          Bakreswar Thermal Power Project presently consists of 3 units of 210 MW each. All the three units are running under commercial operation. The first unit was synchronised on 17th July,1999 in a record time of 37 months and 17 days,  about 5 months before the    Bakreswar Thermal Power Project  scheduled date. The power generated  from these units is evacuated through 400KV lines at Arambag & Jeerat and through 220KV line at Bidhannagar (Durgapur), Satgachia and Gokarna. Another 33KV line to Suri is supplying power in the local area. The completed project cost of units 1,2 & 3 is Rs. 2,578 crores, out of which Japan Bank of International Co-operation (J.B.I.C), Japan extended the loan assistance of Rs. 2,032 crores and the balance of Rs. 546 crores was received from Government of West Bengal as loan to West Bengal Power Development Corporation Limited.

          The Government of West Bengal has authorised West Bengal Power Development Corporation Limited (WBPDCL) to execute another two units of 210MW units at Bakreswar Thermal Power Project to meet the power demand of the state during 10th 5-year plan. Accordingly all the statutory clearances including techno-economic clearance have already been received by WBPDCL. Estimated project cost of unit Nos. 4 & 5 is Rs. 1,772 crores, out of which JBIC has agreed to extend financial assistance for Rs. 1,500 crores. A draft loan agreement has already been signed recently in New Delhi in this respect. It is expected that the final loan agreement will be signed between Government of India and JBIC within March,2003. All the procurement activities for Units Nos. 4 & 5 will be taken up after signing of the final loan agreement.

 

          W.B.S.E.B. in the district is fed from 5 nos Grid Sub Station and BK.T.P.P generating station. Total demand to the tune of 169 MVA is being catered through existing 20 nos 33/11KV station with the available infrastructure & capacity of power, the district is in a position to provide power to the intending industries.
