Introduction

        Birbhum District is advantageously located beside the rich industrial region of Durgapur and Asansol. Two bridges over Ajoy river, one at Bhedia and the other at Bhimgarh / Pandabeswar have provided alternatives corridor and shortened the distance between Barddhaman and Birbhum.

        The riverine district with significant rainfall and network of irrigation system has abundant source of fresh and ground water. Paddy, potato, wheat, sugarcane, Mustard Pulses are among the main cash crops. each. Beside the W.B.S.E.B. has a wide Net Work of Power in the district. The district is well connected with good roads. The Panagarh – Moregram Road of 150KM connecting two National High ways has proved a lifeline for the economy of this district. There is about 272.32 Km of railway track in the district. There are as many as 4 Technical Institute and State-of-the-art telecommunication facilities. This district, taken together the region of Durgapur-Asansole, has plenty of human resources. Adequate land is available for setting up industries & other projects.

        The district has abundant reserve of mineral resources like china clay, stone, coal, quartz & feldspar and geothermal resources. There is plenty of scope to set up Mineral based industries.

        Millions of tourist and pilgrims visit Santiniketan, Tarapith, Bakreswar, Patharchapuri, Joydev-Kenduli, Massanjore round the year. Extensive development of the area through commercially viable projects like holiday resort, etc. may be taken up. Recently, district administration has taken up work of area development at Bakreswar and Tarapith.

        The Ballavpur Forest area of 500 acres, in the near vicinity of Santiniketan, has been fenced. This area has a couple of big water bodies, which attracts thousands and thousands of migratory birds in the winter. This area is suitable for development of sanctuary and setting up of holiday resorts etc. There are few such areas in the district.

        The S.S.D.A. with its perspective plan 2025 and Project of Mega Growth Centre, will certainly create enough scope and accelerate growth of industrialisation and all round development in the district.

           S.S.D.A. was constituted in the year 1989 with an area of 106 sq. km comprising 44 Mouzas including Bolpur Municipality and Visvabharati University area in Bolpur Sub‑Division. 

          Scope of activities: - Land use development and control plan development projects like, road, drainage net work and creation of other social & industrial infrastructure and to plan area development in consonance with natural and ethnic extensiveness of Santiniketan for civic infrastructure suited for rapid urbanisation.

    Infrastructure created  :

i)                     'Gitanjali’ – Auditorium Complex with open air theatre and cafeteria including internet dhaba.

ii)                    Bolpur by-pass road (double lane) – 2.83 Km.

iii)                   Housing 152 flats namely ‘Sonartori’.

iv)                   Prantik Township – 350 residential & commercial plots.

v)                    Commercial complex at Sonartari and Prantik Township.

vi)                   Eco-Park at Lahaband.

vii)                  Link roads connected rural and urban areas.

viii)                 Drainage System at township. 

Future Projects

i)                    Housing project at Bairadihi, Madhusudanpur, Goalpara, Taltore.

ii)                  Training Institute for food technology at Madhusudanpur.

iii)                  Medical Centres at Goalpara Taltore.

iv)                  Home for Senior Citizens, Taltore.

v)                    Indoor Sports Complex at Bolpur.

vi)                  Hospital & Polyclinic at Taltore Bairadihi.

vii)                 Bus and Truck Terminus in 30 acres of Land near Bandhgora. 

 Perspective Plan 2025

          S.S.D.A. is going to formulate perspective plan 2025 within this financial year featuring all of its issues, problems and plan considering 5 nodal areas as Central City Core new tourism and support service centre, educational and cultural nodes, Institutional nodes and major industrial nodes at GROWTH CENTRE. In its plan area S.S.D.A. going to reschedule its Land use to 17% for residential area, commercial and industrial of 4.5% and social infrastructure of 5.5%.
